Building a Sustainable, Ecological & Ethical Business

The UN defines sustainability as "Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

For us, Barley Interiors isn't just about creating value for us in terms of profit in the bank. It's about creating value for everyone involved in bringing our pieces into your home whilst ensuring the planet doesn't suffer for it.

Of course, we want to be successful and make a profit, but that profit should never come at someone else's (or the planet's) expense.

We understand this might sound rich coming from a furniture retailer, an industry traditionally seen as a comprehensive user of raw materials and of being a considerable producer of waste.

However, we believe that we can do things differently by working with people and suppliers that recognise the value of their artisans and makers around the world. People who love creating stunning, unique products, in small batches, from sustainable resources that are paid well for doing so!

Small batch production methods help reduce waste generated and prevent overproduction. Additionally, they allow for a more iterative process. Meaning new techniques and more efficient material usage can be quickly integrated into production.

Likewise, the Mango wood used in much of our furniture comes from commercial regenerative plantations. A by-product of an existing industry, mango trees are traditionally burned when they no longer produce fruit. This reuse of materials is a perfect example of the circular economy we embrace, 'end of life' products repurposed and reused to prevent waste and reduce CO2 emissions.

We also recognise that as an eCommerce retailer, we rely on the domestic and international shipping networks to get our products where they need to go. Again, these networks are a significant contributor to global CO2 levels. We are now working with Carbon Neutral Britain to assess our carbon emissions and offset this by investing in reforestation projects worldwide.

Ultimately, we aim for Barley interiors to not only be Carbon Neutral but to be carbon positive. We want to give back more than we take, in every sense.

We'd love to hear your thoughts.

Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
