We don't do sales, and never will again... Here's why

Tom Coley  |  November 2021

As a small, independent retailer, we don't have the buying power, influence, or budgets of many established brands and multinational corporations.

What we do have, however, is our passion, our values, and our beliefs.

More importantly, we have the power at this early stage in our business to set the direction we want to take Barley Interiors and create the foundations to build our future.

We are passionate about helping people create spaces they are proud of, spaces that inspire and motivate. Passionate about sourcing the most beautiful furniture and homewares from around the world, from the most talented artisans and makers.

More importantly, we are also passionate about growing a thriving business, a business that is not driven by excessive profit, but that thrives on creating value for people (both yours and ours) and the planet.

One of the biggest criticisms we get is that our prices are too high. That "... I can pick up something similar on Amazon for half the price" or "... B&M have tables for way less".

We understand that there are products out there that will potentially ‘do the job’ for less, but there is a consideration to be made about how that impacts the people behind the product. Unfortunately, that's the reality we live in.

Think about it, if you are not paying the cost, who is?

We wish that people around the world were paid fairly and justly for the work they do and could afford to buy things that are priced appropriately, but we truly feel our prices are the minimum required to make these fantastic products sustainably and ethically, and reward those people involved fairly.

That's one of the things we are hoping to do as we grow our business. By working with people and suppliers that recognise the value of their artisans and makers around the world. People who love creating stunning, unique products, in small batches, from sustainable resources and are paid well for doing so.

Here at home, as we build our business and grow our team we want to make sure everyone is paid well and has everything they need to thrive both financially and intellectually. That no one has to work two jobs or fight just to put a roof over their head and food on the table. Our people will be looked after, valued, appreciated and have time to indulge their passions.

There's a long road, with many people involved from where our beautiful products start and where they end in your home. If the only people to benefit from that is Sarah and me, then we are doing something very, very wrong.

We will no longer have sitewide sales because we want to sell our products at the fairest possible price, for all involved, year-round.

We don't want to feed the frenzy of Black Friday and similar sales, and the overconsumption they promote. The likes of which increase stress, anxiety, debt, overproduction and wastage around the world! It just doesn't sit right with us anymore, so we are changing it.

Over the coming weeks and months, we will be giving more information on our plans and goals for Barley Interiors and how we hope to build our company and meet our responsibilities as a sustainable, ecological and ethical retailer.

In the meantime, if you have any questions we would love to hear from you, either leave us a comment or drop us an email at hello@barleyinteriors.co.uk

Love to all,

Tom & Sarah
